Building Material Deliveries in Gauteng: How to Avoid Site Delays

Forklift and delivery vehicle at a construction material supply yard

Construction projects can lose time when materials arrive at the wrong gate, at the wrong time or without suitable unloading arrangements. Good delivery planning helps builders, contractors and homeowners coordinate work more effectively. Use this guide to prepare building material collections and deliveries around Johannesburg, Pretoria and wider Gauteng.

Check exactly what is being collected

List the building materials by type and quantity: pallets of bricks, bundles of timber, bags of cement, steel sections or other items. If possible, obtain the supplier’s packing details, dimensions and estimated total load weight. Some loads need a different handling method from others, so avoid estimating everything as a few “building supplies”.

Identify whether the supplier will assist with loading and whether the consignment is packaged or palletised. Fragile finishes and easily damaged materials should be described separately.

Assess the delivery site before dispatch

Share the site address, correct entrance and name of the person receiving the consignment. Check whether there is enough space for the proposed vehicle to reach and turn at the site. Muddy terrain, narrow access roads, overhead obstacles, limited parking and steep driveways can affect delivery arrangements.

Find out whether unloading equipment and enough people will be available, and whether the delivery must stop at the gate rather than inside the property. These details should be agreed before the vehicle arrives.

Schedule materials around the building programme

A load delivered too early may block access or expose materials to weather; delivered too late, it may leave a team unable to continue. Work with your supplier and site supervisor to plan the delivery window around labour, equipment and available storage space.

For larger projects, separating loads by building phase may be practical. Confirm supplier collection readiness before committing to transport timing, and allow a reasonable buffer for traffic, loading queues or site restrictions.

Prevent confusion at handover

Check counts, condition and paperwork when materials arrive. The receiving person should know what was ordered and where it should be placed. Photograph any visible damage and record discrepancies immediately using the agreed reporting process.

Do not sign off a delivery as fully received without checking what has arrived to the extent practical and safe. Keep supplier documents and transporter correspondence together so any question can be resolved more quickly.

Coordinate transportation and storage

If the site is not ready to receive the goods, ask about alternatives before sending the load. Sometimes warehouse storage and a later local delivery are worth discussing, depending on the nature of the materials and available capacity.
